Two Spanish companies have come top in the Best Plastics Recycled Plastics Awards handed out at the IdentiPlast 2017 conference in Vienna, Austria.
The awards are organised by the European Association of Plastics Recycling & Recovery Organisations (EPRO) and are designed to showcase new and innovative recycled plastic products. There are two categories and at Identiplast, 320 delegates voted for the winners from short lists of finalists in the Product and Product Design categories.
Roofeco Systems won the Product award for its Spanish Rooftile, using recycled plastics modified with nanominerals. Roofeco's website does not specify the polymer material, but says the nano materials used in the formulation “multiply the effect of the conventional additives by 4, thus slowing down the degradation of the material”.
In terms of performance, the tiles withstand: temperatures from -40° to 50° C; winds of up to 178km/hour; and tornado suction forces of up to 650Kg/m2 (135psf).
Referring to the award Marianella Martinez, director at Roofeco Systems, said: “I feel proud and enthusiastic of valorising plastic residues into an aesthetic, lightweight, 100% waterproof and hail resistant Spanish roof tile system. Through a process that needs 70% less energy than conventional Spanish ceramic roof tiles.”
SP-Berner of Spain was presented with the Design Award for its Miami outdoor furniture which is designed to be made with 30% post-consumer recycled plastic.
The other finalist in the Design category was Mi-Bin in Ireland with the multifunctional bin, Mi-Bin.
In the Product category, there were four other finalists: Counterplas in the UK with the Loft stilt; Papier-Mettler, from Germany with Tesco bags for life; SP-Berner with the Venus set of outdoor furniture; and Incoplas from Belgium with the EUR range bottles.
