European footballing giants Bayern Munich took to the field on Saturday (5 November) wearing a special kit made entirely from plastic garbage collected from the sea.

The plastic was originally collected after washing up on the shores of the Maldives and was recycled to create fibres from which the one-off kit was made.

"I grew up on the beaches of Spain. Therefore, I am particularly pleased to be able to wear a jersey made 100% from recycled ocean waste," said Bayern midfielder Xabi Alonso while presenting the kit.

“This is a great opportunity to draw attention to the importance of protecting the world's oceans.”

The initiative is from kit manufacturer Adidas, who is launching its first kits made from Parley Ocean Plastic.

In June, Adidas and environmental initiative Parley for the Oceans released a batch of recycled running shoes using recycled plastic retrieved from the sea.

Real Madrid, also sponsored by Adidas, will wear their strip against Sporting Gijon on 26 November.
