Versalis and Genomatica have signed a memorandum with US-based Genomatica to produce bio-based butadiene.
Butadiene is used to produce rubber for tires, plastics, electrical appliances, pipes and latex.
The project will develop an end-to-end process of producing polymer—grade butadiene from biomass. Genomatica will provide technologies, while Versalis will bring expertise in catalysis processes.
Versalis, a subsidiary of Enis, will hold a majority stake in the partnership and is planning on building commercial plants.
